What is a Universal Housing?

OpenLocks Team

Universal Housing? I think not.Is there a Universal Housing which can work with all brands cores?

The answer is: it depends.

If you are using Full Size Interchangeable Cores, it doesn’t exist. FSIC cores are brand-specific. There is no housing which can universally accept all brands of Full Size Interchangeable Cores (FSIC).

However, you may use a Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC), which is the exact same size and shape for any lock manufacturer. So, if you order a housing which accepts SFIC, it will work with any SFIC.

If you need a universal rim housing and have the option to choose, it’s easy. Just order a Rim Housing for SFIC.

If you need a universal mortise housing, you need to know the cam type. If you don’t know, your best bet is either the Schlage or Yale cams. These will work in just about all locks.
